Various USC Athletic Facility Renovations

In an increasing effort to attract the best athletes for collegiate completion University of Southern California Athletics is constantly improving their facilities.  The latest round of improvements included Heritage Hall, John McKay Center, Uytengsu Aquatics Center, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum & Sports Arena, Ron Deadeaux Baseball Field & Facilities, Marks Tennis Stadium & Facilities, and McCallister Field & Facilities.

Heritage Hall

Vista Environmental Consulting (Vista) performed a comprehensive hazardous materials survey, develop project bidding documents and perform contractor observation and management for the remodeling of Heritage Hall. This planned remodeling of Heritage Hall involved the complete demolition of the interior, removal of all interior finishes and systems and hard demolition of limited areas for the reconfiguration of the interior spaces.

John McKay

In order to make way for the new John McKay Center, Vista was performed a comprehensive hazardous materials survey of the existing building and developed bidding documents and performed contractor observation and management during the remediation and structure demolition. Based on the planned recycling and reuse of the remaining non-hazardous materials and creative use of green waste, concrete and asphalt shingle recycling, this project obtained a 98% recycle for the entire building and site demolition project, far exceeding the City of Los Angeles’s mandate for diversion of 69%.

Uytengsu Aquatics Center

Vista was retained to perform a comprehensive hazardous materials survey of the existing building, developed bidding documents, and performed contractor observation and management during the remediation and structure demolition. This project added the significant complexity of maintaining active use of the Olympic swimming pool and diving facilities during the remediation and demolition of the office structure.  Throughout the remediation process, there were no impacts to any of the swimming or diving operations in an area of high use and high student traffic.

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum & Sports Arena

Vista performed a comprehensive hazardous materials survey of the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and a priority survey of the Los Angeles Sports Arena.  These specialized services were required as University of Southern California was planning to take over management and maintenance of these historic and significant facilities. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was built in 1932 and encompasses approximately 750,000sf.  The large square footages, complex infrastructure spaces and hidden passage ways presented a number of unique challenges in accomplishing this survey in an efficient and cost-effective manner, while not interrupting any ongoing operations (Olympic Committee visits).

Ron Deadeaux Baseball Field & Facilities, Marks Tennis Stadium & Facilities, and McCallister Field & Facilities

University of Southern California has utilized Vista for the performance of professional environmental consulting services and remediation management since 2008.  All of the various non-football related stadiums and facilities undergo limited improvements on an on-going basis. Vista’s activities typically involve a review of the proposed project scope of work, performance of hazardous materials surveys and/or site assessments, development of bidding documents, performance of contractor job walks and the observation and management of any required remediation operations.
